Haven't been blogging because...well, there really hasn't been lots to blog about. Martin's dogs are still on the glacier and should be home around mid-September. In the meantime, I've been busy getting the dog yard ready preparing things for fall training and preparing myself for the rigors of the trail.
I've painted all the old dog houses and the wood shop class at school is building and painting 15 new houses. I'll sleep better at night this winter knowing that every house is winterized well and comfy for the dogs. Will be nice to have all the houses be able to hold lots of straw without most of it ending up on the ground.
Since a knee injury at the end of last season left me unable to run for awhile, my choice of activity for the summer has been biking. I am commuting to school on my bike for my workouts. Takes me a little over an hour to get to school. I leave the house at 4:15am and since it's dark at that hour and I have to ride by headlamp, can't really go too fast. Don't want to take a spill hitting something in the trail and don't want to run into the back end of a moose or bear. I'm loving those lonely, dark rides though. Great time to enjoy the solitude and that feeling that you are the only person on earth that only traveling by headlamp can bring. When it rains....oh well, I'm cold and wet. It all makes for good Iditarod training. The rides home aren't quite as fun....too much noise and traffic, but beats a car ride any day. Once the dogs are here and we're training, I'll hang up the bike and get on the treadmill and in the weight room at school in the mornings. Won't be quite as fun as riding to school, but that extra hour's sleep will be nice.
I'm back at Wasilla High teaching PE and loving it. Great to see the kids again, meet new ones and get a fresh start. I have the greatest job in the world - well, most days!
