New Goals for NSK
Time for new plans for NSK. This season, with
it's tough trail conditions, has forced us to make some tough decisions. Many
of the "older" dogs are ready to retire from racing. Since we downsized this
fall we were down to 14 racing dogs. Since then Oakley has been diagnosed with
hip dysplasia; Bossy cannot keep up with the speed anymore due mostly to her
thyroid condition; Sandy is having hip issues; and Gopher is not happy with the
speed and distance anymore. Since all these dogs still need to exercise, but
just at slower speeds and less distance, and since they just love to run, we are
forming a "recreational" team. This will allow some dogs that haven't been
running in a team for awhile, to do so again. This new team will start with
just a couple miles a few times a week and increase from there to a distance
that will keep them all healthy and happy.
Recreational
Team:Atlas, Bossy, Oakley, Sandy, Europa,
and Syndey (maybe even Gabby, if we can get her off the
couch)The "race" team, which is too
small with only 10 dogs to plan on any mid-distance races will do shorter sprint
races:Yuban, Koala Bear, Red Skelton,
Chippewa, and the two year olds...Hammer, Curtis, Perl, Java, Logo,
Pascal.Gopher is going to join Bat
Baby and Pancake with Meredith Mapes. She's a junior musher that is just a
natural with the dogs. She ran the Jr. Cantwell Classic this year and is
planning on Jr. Iditarod next year. Gopher will do well with the speed and
distance this team runs and will make a great bullpen leader for Meredith.
It's so hard to rehome these dogs who
have been with us so long and have brought us safely home from so many
adventures. However, I know that they are all in places and with people who
love them, are still running them and we're they're very happy. I would never
have learned to mush if people hadn't given me good, older dogs that could teach
me what mushing is all about. I'm thrilled to be able to pass that down to a 13
year old girl who has dreams. NSK
Recreational Team: Run #1 Poor Gabby was shell shocked. Long way from the
couch to the gangline, even for just a 2 mile run. Can you tell who worked the
hardest? Atlas was THE MAN! First time leading a team in 3
years.
